HC verdict makes India 127th country to legalise homosexuality

With Delhi High Court legalising gay sex, India On Thursday become the 127th country in the world to de-criminalise homosexuality while 80 nations still consider it as an offence.

The process of legal sanction of homosexual acts began in 1989 when Denmark became the first country to grant a status on par with married couples to same sex partners which was soon followed by other European countries.

Seven years thereafter, Norway, Sweden and Iceland enacted similar legislation in 1996 and Finland followed suit six years later.

Netherlands became the first nation to give full civil marriage rights to gay couples in 2001.

Belgium allowed gay marriages in 2003. Spain too legalised full marriages for gay couples in June 2005.

In July 2005, Canada legalised same-sex marriage.

New Zealand in 2004 recognised civil union between gay couples as valid and same sex union was recognised in 2005 in South Africa.

The first gay civil union in Argentina took place in 2003, thus making it the first country in Latin America to allow such unions.

In December 2007, neighbouring Nepal's Supreme Court had ordered the government to scrap laws that discriminate against homosexuals.

Other countries were not far behind with Belgium allowing gay marriages in 2003, France giving some rights to cohabiting couples regardless of sex under its law called PACS in 1999 and Spain legalising full marriages for gay couples in 2005.

Not only this, Germany has also allowed same sex couples to register for "life partnership" since 2001.

Several states in the US have passed amendments to their constitution which defined marriage as a union of man and a woman.

Legal history shows that there was even a provision in the 13th and 14th centuries in some countries to burn those alive who indulged in unnatural sexual acts.

Can someone explain why this is sick, disgusting and worse than animals?

Have you ever heard or seen Gay/Lesbain Animals (eg gay horses, dog, rats etc etc)....its really rare to see any other creature havin sex with the same sex partner. Why do you think no one should have problem with it?

If say tommorrow you come to know your wife is a lesbain (after 10-15yrs of marriage) and enjoys having sex with her girlfriend what will be your reaction, same question applies to your future Kids...what will you do if you came to know all this.

Regarding 'my' wife turning out gay, I would say that it would be a complex issue. I shouldnt have married a lesbian to begin with. Trying to tie down your loved ones for your selfishness will make them unhappy and in turn make you very unhappy. I would have to discuss the whole situation and let her go maybe. People arent created homosexual, they are born as such. If 'my' kids turn out homosexual, might as well let do as they please rather than make their life miserable. Thats all.

Well, i guess we are the only 2 peoplr who dont think this is sick and disgusting. Being Dutch and seeing this widely on the streets gays & lesbians are just like other people, they are also borN on earth! Im really proud that my 'desh' was the first one to give full marrige rights to gays & lesbians. I even know some gay boys and they are nrmal people. This isnt sick, this is life in 2009. With everyone on earth should have equal rights and not be disriminated.

Maybe you do. But what if Supreme Court throws out the appeal? Would you accept? I dont think its about minding 'being' gay. Either you are or you are not gay. How would you like if a gay person decides that you are not normal and that you are sick?

I dont think its sick. They are also born on earth and they should have right to chose their partner
